New colony of emperor penguins discovered

The newly discovered colony of emperor penguins were discovered at Verleger Point, West Antarctica.

The colony is home at around 500 penguins and brings the total number of known colonies to 66.

The discovery in important to scientists as studying them helps them to understand more about emperor penguins.

To avoid the environmental impact of scientists travelling around Antarctica, scientists use satellites that take very high resolution pictures of the area they want to search.

The scientists have to look at these images and are able to find the colonies by the snow being stained by penguin poop.

Scientists also use the satellites to track and monitor other animals such as, polar bears, seals, walruses, whales, and sea birds.
