alaskan sea otters under threat again

After successfully introducing Alaskan sea otters onto Pleasant Island, a remote island in Alaska, where they were brought back from the brink of extinction. They are under threat again from wolves.

The island is (49 square kilometres (19 square miles) and about 65 km (40 miles) west of Juneau. In the North Western Region of British Columbia.
It is just over 1km from the mainland at its nearest point.

The wolves first swam to the island in 2013. They started feeding on the deer population there.

Scientists put collars on some of the wolves and studied their poop to see what they were eating.

They discovered that between 2015 and 2020 deer went from being 75% of their diet to only 7% of their diet.
At the same time the sea otters went from being 25% of their diet to 57% of their diet.

They were able to confirm that the wolves were not leaving the island to feed elsewhere.

The scientists were surprised to find out that the wolves were not just eating dead or injured otters, they were actively hunting them as they rested on rocks during low tide.
