 Tigger's Tails - April 2022

Hi Pals,
I was thrown down a challenge by two of my pals in Australia. I was barking on social media about having my favourite Marmite on toast for breakfast. Dash and Crumpet suggested I should try Vegemite. So the challenge was on…

Cost:
Marmite is nearly £5 for a 500g jar.
Vegemite At first glance looked a lot cheaper at nearly £2.50 a jar, until I realised it was only a 220g jar.

I normally use Marmite in cooking too, but for this test I restricted it to two slices of toast and spread one with Marmite and one with Vegemite. I did this challenge over several days to ensure fairness as I already eat Marmite regularly and I wanted to give the Vegemite a fair test.

Looks:
I think I can honestly say, neither of these can be voted on by their looks.

Marmite is a very dark brown, almost black looking gloopy substance. Like runny honey, but a lot lot thicker and darker BOL! It is very thick and impossible to spread on hot toast. The trick is to let the toast cool slightly or it will just rip up the toasted part of the bread. Marmite is really thick and needs to be stored in a cupboard when opened, because if you store it in the fridge it will become a thicker gloop that is impossible to spread. Care is needed that you don’t let any run down the side of the jar as it will ’glue’ the lid shut and you will have a whole new challenge.

Vegemite is a darkish brown colour and it is a very dry sort of paste. You dig in with the knife expecting some sort of soft chocolate texture, but it is a much drier texture, almost to the point of being dry. It is much easier to spread and can be spread on very hot toast without too much difficulty.

Taste:
I did two taste tests. I did a tongue taste where |I put a bit straight on my tongue and another taste test where I put it on the toast.

Tongue test:
Marmite on my tongue was very thick and gloopy. It has a sweet but overpowering strong taste which is too strong for me. Being gloopy it took a while to get the Marmite and the taste off my tongue.
Vegemite was very strong but towards a bitter and salty sort of taste. Being an almost dried spread it was easily removed from my tongue but the taste did linger a bit afterwards.

Toast Test:
Marmite was somewhat sweet, strong and had a beefy sort of after taste even though there is no meat products in there.

Vegemite was surprisingly less bitter and salty than the tongue test. It was not too strong and still had the bitter after taste but it seemed to work on the toast.

Result:
It was nice to try something new. I still prefer Marmite, but I will eat the Vegemite as I do have the rest of the jar to eat.

Nose bump to you
