Duke visits Basildon Park
- July 2023

Repawter: Duke
Tails from my trip to Basildon Park

I want to tell you about my trip to Basildon National Trust which is a property just outside of Reading Berkshire.

Firstly it's an amazing building to look at front the front or back.

It was built in 17th Century and the last owners were Lord & Lady IIiffe in the 1950 before the national trust took it over 1978. Previous owners included James Morrison 1824 who was said to be the richest commoner in England where his haberdashery business had an annual turnover to over £1 million.

There is over 400 acres of parkland to explore. The day I went it was hot and there was cattle in the fields with calves so it wasn't wise for me to walk in the fields.

The good news is there was a lovely garden with very smelly roses in that I sat in with Hoomom whilst hoodad went in the house.

Talking of the house there is 13 rooms to go in. In there is a chair used for the queens coronation.  But the visit to the shell room is amazing. Everything is edged with shells as well as shells in glass cabinets.

For us hounds there is a section of the cafe that is dog friendly and in the outside seating area. In both areas there are water bowls. But better still on this hot day I got an ice cream.

After the visit I went into the stable shops to get my national trust passport stable plus fuss and a biscuit from the staff.

I did see a horse in the stables called Basil.

The house has been used for Downton Abbey and one I would love to visit again.

Until next time
love and licks
