Lucy and Nelson - On the Move
February 2025
Hola Amigos/woof hello Buddies
We sent our humans to go and watch the 3 kings parade, as it is too busy and noisy for dogs. Plus our hoomans said if we go there would be no sweets left for the children
The Three kings parade is held on the evening of the 5th of January and is known as the Dia de los Reyes or the King’s Day. It celebrates the arrival of the three wise men to Bethlehem. In Spain the three kings are named Melchior (Arabia), Casper (the Orient) and Balthazar (Africa). During the events around Spain the 3 kings can be statues or people dressed up.
The parade usually consists of floats either pulled by horses or vehicles.
As the parade moves down the main street the kings start to throw sweets for the children. The parades are very family orientated and are usually in the early evening so children can watch them before going to bed.
After the parade children are traditionally supposed to put a cleaned pair of shoes outside their door for the kings to fill with gifts in the night. It is said good children get gifts but bad children get lumps of coal.
Presents are not given on the 25th of December and instead are given on the 6th, with some allowing one present to be opened on the 5th before bed time.
Over time some families now split present giving between the 25th of December and the 6th of January.
The 6th of January is a public holiday and a tradition cake is eaten. It is a bread sprinkled with sugar and dried fruits, called the Roscon de Reyes. Inside the cake is a king and queen and a bean. Whoever received the king and queen gets waited on for the day. Whoever find the bean has to buy the Roscon de Reyes next year.
The 3 Kings Parade in Turre is slightly different each year.
Last year the 3 kings where in cars and the Fire truck joined in. This year they used horses.
There were 7 horses , 4 pulling 2 carriages and 3 been ridden , the kings arrived in one carriage then mounted the float and started throwing sweets with some force , and the Hooman Puppies (aka kids) scramble to get the sweets.
