Holly is a shrub or a tree, depending on the size of it and how it has been pruned while growing.
Left to grow wild it can grow into an 80 foot tree, with a spread of over 25 feet.

Typically they have dark green spiky leaves and bright red berries, but there are varieties with green and yellow, green and white, and other coloured leaves.

To ensure holly produces flowers and berries, there need to be a male and a female plant.
It takes around 3 years for holly to grow from seed to a shrub or tree and a further 3 years for it to produce flowers.

Eating:
Holly and its berries are poisonous to dogs, cats and rabbits.

Consuming either the leaves or berries will leave them feeling very poorly and cause upset tummies.
So if your human uses holly to decorate the house, tell them to check that they are out of reach of inquisitive noses and mouths. They also need to check no berries have fallen onto the floor where they could be eaten.
