Mistletoe is poisonous to humans and animals

Lifespan:
Mistletoe seem to be only limited by the lifespan of the tree they have grown on. Some plant are over 100 years old, but a few only survive around 8 years due to storm damage that could dislodge the plant from the tree and harvesting by humans.

Mistletoe does not grow on the ground. It is a parasitic plant and requires trees to survive.
Birds eat the seeds of plants. When they poop in trees, the seeds stick to the branches of trees. If it is the correct type of tree the mistletoe needs, it starts to grow. It does not normally kill the tree it is feeding off, although it can weaken it, .
It takes 3 to 5 years to mature.

Mistletoe grows to around 3 feet high and 2 feet wide, although sometimes the weight of the mistletoe can cause a branch to break off the tree or cause the tree to bend or break.

Its favourite host trees include apple, hawthorne and poplar trees. It prefers to grow on trees in open areas with plenty of light, rather than in dense woodlands.

There are more than 900 mistletoe species. Viscum album is the only species native to the UK.
Its evergreen leaves and ability to bloom in winter mean the plant has long been seen as a symbol of eternal life and vitality.

Eating:
Mistletoe is poisonous to both animals and humans. The only things immune to the poison are birds and some insects.
Some humans use mistletoe around the house to decorations at Christmas.

If any animal or human eats any of the mistletoe, then you must get medical advice straight away.
