Nature in August

Whether you’re keen on bird watching, exploring coastal habitats, or just exploring with your human at your local park, August offers an opportunity appreciate the beauty of nature.

Flora and fauna:
The countryside becomes alive with greenery and vibrant wildflowers. Fields are full of colourful blooms, and gardens glow with chrysanthemums and dahlias. In national parks and nature reserves plants like heather, orchids, and roses reach their peak flowering period. These flowers are vital for helping bees and butterflies flourish.

The Call of the Birds:
August is a significant time for bird watchers. Many species are busy preparing for migration, creating a buzz of activity in gardens, parks, and woodlands. It is often the last chance to spot birds displaying their colourful plumage and melodious calls. Look out for young fledglings who are still mastering the art of flight.
For anyone hoping to see migratory birds, the latter part of the month heralds the arrival of waders and shorebirds. Coastal areas such as the Northumberland coast and the Isle of Skye become vital hotspots. Birds like curlews and sandpipers can be spotted, preparing for their long journeys south. Bring a pair of binoculars on your walks.

Coastal Wonders:
If you are near the coast the warm waters attract an array of wildlife, from seals to dolphins. Some locations offer guided tours that allow you the chance to see them in their natural habitat.

Rock pools also come alive with a variety of marine creatures revealed at low tide. You can explore these mini-ecosystems, searching for crabs, anemones, and maybe even a starfish or two. It's a reminder of the delicate balance of life that exists beneath the waves.

The buzz of the Bees:
In rural landscapes, farmers and conservationists work throughout the summer to create bio diverse habitats that support a variety of species.

During August, you can witness the fruits of their labour, fields brimming with wildflowers that attract a multitude of insects. Beekeeping is also in full swing, with hives buzzing with activity.

The Magic of Mammals:
As the days get shorter, mammals become more active in search of food before autumn sets in. Keep an eye out for hedgehogs making their way into gardens, searching for slugs and insects.

August is a great month for dusk walks, as you might spot deer grazing in fields or foxes cautiously emerging from their dens.
Witnessing these animals in their natural habitat is an experience that you will remember long after the summer ends.
