Our visit to Culloden
When on our hodilays to Fortrose on the Black Isle with mum and dad, we spent a very interesting afternoon exploring Culloden Battlefield.

It was here that this famous last battle on British soil was fought on 16th April 1746 between the British Government forces led by the Duke of Cumberland and the Jacobites led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart, aka Bonnie Prince Charlie. It was one of the most bloodiest battles in British history and took less than an hour for Cumberland’s men to crush the Jacobites, thus ending the Jacobite dream of restoring the Stuarts to the British throne. Of the 1,300 soldiers who were killed, 1,250 were Jacobites.

The Battlefield
It’s a fairly long walk through the battlefield, here you will see flags which mark out the front lines of both armies, a memorial cairn, the nearby grave markers that bear the names of some, but not all of the clans involved in the battle and Leanach cottage.

Interestingly, the Fraser gravestone is temporarily cordoned off as the ground has been damaged due to the high number of Outlander fans visiting the grave.

Dog Friendly
Dogs are allowed on the battlefield but must be kept on a leash.

There is a doggy exercise field situated just behind the visitor centre where you’re allowed off leash but it’s not fully enclosed.

There are bowls of water at the entrance to the visitor centre and there are a number of poo bins dotted around the site.

Sadly dogs are not pawmitted inside the visitor centre and shop so mum and dad took it in turns dog sitting us seeing they both wanted a nosey inside the shop.

The café doesn’t allow dogs either but it does have an outdoor seating area which allows dogs. Unfortunately the café was shut by the time we got there (after 5pm) so we didn’t get a chance to check it out but it does have vegan options for humans. Maybe next time says mum..……
